First Data Privacy Principles
The Responsibility of Leadership
As a world leader in electronic commerce and payment services, First Data processes the information that enables businesses and consumers to pay for goods and services by credit, debit or stored-value cards and by check at the point of sale, over the Internet, or by money transfer.
First Data works behind the scenes on behalf of banks, other card issuers and merchants. Through Western Union, we enable consumers to transfer funds within minutes and take advantage of a number of other payment services. As commerce moves more and more toward the Internet and wireless communications, First Data will continue to develop solutions that enable businesses and consumers to pay anyone, anywhere, anytime.
Millions of consumers and businesses rely on First Data and its subsidiaries for safe and reliable payment services. Each day, we—and our more than 29,000 employees around the globe—strive to reinforce our commitment to our business customers and consumers.
In order to provide these services, First Data must collect, maintain and use financial and other sensitive personal information. We believe that information used responsibly benefits consumers and the economy. Here are just a few examples of how First Data's use of information ultimately benefits consumers:
| • | |
Annually, First Data helps businesses and consumers easily make over 10 billion payments with credit cards and checks. |
| • | |
The
state-of-the-art systems and information used by First Data reduce
potentially fraudulent behavior because fraud is detected much earlier
in the payment cycle. Without First Data helping to ascertain the risk
of extending credit or accepting checks, fraud could increase and
businesses would have to pass related costs on to consumers or stop
accepting certain forms of payment. |
| • | |
Every day, information is used to ensure fast and accurate processing of thousands of money transfers worldwide. |
